EBT Theft Protection

CDSS and its county partners are committed to protecting your data. We are continually looking for ways to improve security, reduce theft and simplify communications. Below you will find information on how to better protect yourself from fraud and resources that are available

How to protect yourself from EBT theft

Your county or the state will never text or call you requesting your personal information such as your EBT card number and your personal identification number (PIN).

If you are contacted about your EBT account, you should not provide any personal information.

The only situation in which you should provide your EBT card number is when you directly call a) your county welfare office, or b) the EBT customer service line on the back of your card for assistance.

  • Keep your EBT card number and PIN a secret.
  • Change your PIN regularly

How to change your EBT card PIN

You can call the toll-free EBT customer service line any time to change you card PIN. The EBT customer service line is listed on the back of your card: (877) 328-9677.

CDSS may occasionally contact EBT cardholders to encourage them to change their PIN to protect their benefits, but will never ask for the card holder’s information via text message.

What to do if your EBT card is lost or stolen

If you think your benefits may have been stolen, you should immediately contact your county social services agency and complete a Report of Electronic Theft of Benefits.

How to report a potential scam

If you receive communication – a call, text, or email – that you think may not be from the state or your county, please report it to us at CDSSEBT@DSS.CA.GOV or call 1-800-344-TIPS
