Domestic Abuse
Domestic Abuse Training For CalWORKS Staff
The Domestic Abuse Training for CalWORKs Staff was presented to County Welfare Department staff through a series of training forums beginning May 2002. This two-day training, developed by the University of California, Davis, was an excellent opportunity for CalWORKs staff throughout the state to better learn how to identify and serve CalWORKs clients who are victims of domestic abuse. County Welfare Departments are welcome to use curriculum materials from this training (available below) to train both new and seasoned staff when applicable.
You may be eligible for a waiver if:
- You have experienced domestic abuse:
This includes physical, sexual, or emotional harm, threats, stalking, controlling behaviors (e.g., financial control, isolation), or any other form of abuse that causes harm or fear.
- Participation in CalWORKs requirements is unsafe or unreasonably difficult:
For example:
- If attending work or training could lead to increased risk of harm.
- If meeting certain requirements interferes with your ability to address the abuse, such as attending court appointments, securing safe housing, or accessing support services.
- You are willing to discuss your situation with a county case worker:
While you are not required to provide detailed evidence, sharing your circumstances helps the county worker understand your needs and provide support.
- Waiver of program requirements:
Some or all Welfare-to-Work (WTW) activities may be modified or temporarily excused.
- Other requirements that may be waived:
Time limit on aid, parental establishment, child support cooperation, and proof of immunizations.
- Access to support services:
The county can provide services such as counseling, legal aid, housing assistance, or safety planning.
Contact your
county case worker to explain your situation and request a domestic abuse waiver. They are trained to assist you with understanding your options and connecting you to resources.
