Domestic Abuse

CalWORKs is committed to supporting survivors of domestic abuse in achieving safety, stability, and long term well-being. If you are a current recipient and have experienced domestic abuse, resources are available to help you navigate your path forward.

Available supports include:

  • Flexible Program Requirements: If work or other program requirements are challenging due to your situation, you may be eligible for program waivers that allow you to focus on your safety.
  • Specialized Services: Access counseling, legal assistance, and domestic abuse advocacy services intended to provide guidance and support during difficult times.
  • Financial Assistance: CalWORKs benefits, including cash assistance, food support, and child care services are available to help you maintain stability for yourself and your family.
  • Additional Resources: If you need referrals for emergency housing, safety planning, or other specialized support, we are here to connect you with the right resource.

You’re not alone.

Your safety and well-being matter. CalWORKs is here to ensure you have the support and resources needed to create and secure a hopeful future for yourself and your family.

You may be eligible for a waiver if:

  • You have experienced domestic abuse:
This includes physical, sexual, or emotional harm, threats, stalking, controlling behaviors (e.g., financial control, isolation), or any other form of abuse that causes harm or fear.
  • Participation in CalWORKs requirements is unsafe or unreasonably difficult:
    For example:
    • If attending work or training could lead to increased risk of harm.
    • If meeting certain requirements interferes with your ability to address the abuse, such as attending court appointments, securing safe housing, or accessing support services.
  • You are willing to discuss your situation with a county case worker:
While you are not required to provide detailed evidence, sharing your circumstances helps the county worker understand your needs and provide support.
  • Waiver of program requirements:
Some or all Welfare-to-Work (WTW) activities may be modified or temporarily excused.
  • Other requirements that may be waived:
Time limit on aid, parental establishment, child support cooperation, and proof of immunizations.
  • Access to support services:
The county can provide services such as counseling, legal aid, housing assistance, or safety planning.
Contact your county case worker to explain your situation and request a domestic abuse waiver. They are trained to assist you with understanding your options and connecting you to resources.
